Disclaimer: I was invited to screen this movie in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
Coco releases officially in theatres November 22nd. Just in time for Thanksgiving here in the United States to celebrate the meaning of family and remembering those who have gone before us. My family and I had the chance to see Coco before it comes to theatres. The animation, the colors, the story, all came together to deliver a Disney-Pixar’s masterpiece.
I will admit that this movie is tough to review without giving away spoilers so I will leave you with the basics. Coco is nothing like I imagined it to be. I had expected a lovely story about family, love of music, and the beautiful festivities of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) but it is so much more. There are twists and turns in the story that will keep you on your feet. I thought Moana had done a fine enough job at tugging at my heartstrings but Coco pulled them even harder.
Coco is Disney-Pixar’s New Masterpiece
Disney-Pixar has already let the audience in on the base of the story. The lead character, Miguel (voice of newcomer Anthony Gonzalez), dreams of becoming an accomplished musician like his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz (voice of Benjamin Bratt), despite the generations-old ban on music within his family. How this story unfolds will leave you a bit on the edge of your seat. I was so intrigued by the story that I couldn’t believe the movie was already over when it was.
Coco Sparked My Story
Coco also brought out the feeling of finding oneself in their family. My family is spread across the board due to separations, family divides, etc. I have felt the effects of finding connections with family I did not know I had. I learned about where some of my passions come from, why I act certain ways, and so much more. Miguel gets this opportunity when he finally finds the connection within his family and can help remind everyone what brings them all together.
Coco is a must see in my book. It has become one of my new favorite Disney-Pixar films. I was left enthralled by the story, moved by the characters, and fascinated with the visual wonder that the film provided. I have recommended it to so many friends and family and those who I know that have seen advanced screenings have left feeling the same way. Disney-Pixar outdid themselves with Coco.
