Another name for this pie is Dutch Apple Pie. I recommend using Ginger Gold Apples as they hold their shape incredibly well while baking. They also give a great flavor to the pie.

What are the best apples for baking?

For this recipe, I personally recommend Ginger Gold. It holds its shape and has an incredible flavor for apple pie.

However, if you can also use Honeycrisp, Jonagold, Pink Lady, or Braeburn.

What are Ginger Gold apples good for?

They make incredible tarts on top of this great crumble pie recipe. They also make for great applesauce with just enough spice and taste amazing when dried.

How do you make Apple Crumble Pie from scratch?

Making Apple Crumble Pie is very easy. I personally think this is an easier Apple Pie recipe from having to make a lattice crust.

To Make the Dough:

To make the dough, mix the flour and salt together. Use a pastry cutter or fork (I really suggest investing in a pastry cutter) to cut in the butter and shortening until the dough mixture looks like pea-sized crumbs.

Add in the water by one tablespoon at a time. Stir between each mixture until the dough starts to come together.

Press the dough together and divide it into two thick discs. Wrap the discs in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30-minutes or up to 3-days.

To Make the Filling:

In a large bowl, mix the apple slices with the sugar, flour, lemon juice and spices. Place the filling mixture in the refrigerator for 30-minutes.

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Be sure to move your oven rack to the lower third part of the oven.

For the Crumble Topping:

Mix the flour, sugars, and cinnamon together in a mixing bowl.

Using a pastry cutter, cut in the butter into the mixture. Again, form pea-sized crumbs.

How to Assemble an Apple Crumble Pie:

Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface. Roll into a 12-inch circle and transfer it into a greased pie dish. Flute the edges, if desired.

Pour the apple filling into the dough being sure to discard the liquid from the bowl. Mound the mixture in the middle of the pie crust.

Sprinkle the crumble topping over the mixture, ensuring that you are covering all of the apples.

Bake in the oven for 40-45-minutes or until the toppings begin to become a golden brown. Be sure to place a silicone mat or baking sheet under the rack to catch drippings.

Cool on a wire rack and let the filling set for 2-hours before serving.
