Disney+ shared some struggles during this morning’s launch but that was to be expected with literally hundreds of thousands of folks trying to stream at once. The issues seemed to resolve quickly and now the question remains if Netflix will stand a chance through this launch.
As a family of four, I am already considering the odds between keeping Netflix or just streaming through Disney+. Our kids enjoy a handful of shows on Netflix and my husband and I have become followers of series such as The Ranch.
However, I have been noticing that we scroll less and less through Netflix these days. It seems like once our series have ended for the season, we tend to stay off the platform.
Original Content Is Not Dropping All At Once
Disney Plus has only been alive and well for less than 24-hours but I am already seeing it exceed my expectations. I prefer that the original content isn’t dropping all at once. We’re having to wait for chapters to release weekly or by their schedule.
I know that is one of the things about Netflix that you can “binge” and be done. Like I said before, we tend to do that and then the platform just sits there. I like having that hype again and discussions of “what is going to happen next”.
The other positive is knowing that this specific platform will only offer PG-13 and lower ratings to stream. As a parent, I hate letting my kids mindlessly stream on platforms like YouTube and Netflix when I just don’t know. I understand there are parental controls on both, but my kids can easily figure out how to get around those.
I like having familiar content that I know I can safely let me kids watch. Bring on Disney Afternoon flashbacks! Also, it is nice to have clean adult content too.
I’m not a prude. I drop a curse word now and then (more than I should), I read books and watch television with language. I feel like sometimes we are so immersed in it these days. Call me sheltered but I enjoy having “feel-good” options with storylines rather than constant “shock value”.
Value Of Cost
The other factor is cost. Disney+ is right now half the cost of Netflix after subscribing to the yearly deals. Now, this might change over time but as of now, the value is great. We purchased the D23 Founder’s Circle 3-year subscription deal earlier in 2019 so we are set. I’ll be curious to evaluate any changes at the end of that time frame but for now, I think it is well worth the cost.
Between treasured classics and brand-new original series, this new service is handing us magic on a silver platter. The fact that I am sitting down to evaluate if Netflix is worth the continued cost this early in the game speaks volumes to me. As a parent and as a consumer.
Disney has really released Christmas early with this new service here on November 12, 2019. The Mandalorian has already blown my mind as a Star Wars nerd and I cannot wait to enjoy movie nights with the family and evenings with my husband watching documentaries. Disney has kept with the family theme and something for everyone.
Will We Be Canceling Netflix Now With Disney+?
It is hard to stray from original Netflix series that my kids love, such as Spirit Riding Free, but even those are becoming few and far between. We might just order some of the series on Amazon Prime Video since we no longer will need to “rent” Disney movies On Demand.
I have not pulled the plug on Netflix yet, but I think the cancelation request isn’t too far behind this post. I think other streaming services are going to have to evaluate things very quickly with the launch of Disney+.
It feels good to have good television at our fingertips again and it is worth the cost. Our world needs some “feel-good”.
