Dying Easter Eggs with food coloring is one of the least expensive and simplest ways to enjoy coloring eggs. Save some time at the grocery store by using food coloring that you already have in your baking supplies.
Dying Easter Eggs with gel food coloring is also very simple. For this project, I actually use gel coloring because it is what I have on hand.

When it comes to coloring eggs, the only difference between gel and regular food coloring is ensuring that you stir a little longer to ensure all of the gel breaks up in the mixture.
I do find that gel tends to hold a better color than using regular food coloring. However, both will give off a vibrant color.
Don’t worry if you can’t find a purple or orange that you might be looking for that typically come in kits. You can mix primary colors to create those desired colors! This is also a fun way to teach the kids about what colors mix to make a new color.
How to dye Easter Eggs with food coloring:
Begin by hard boiling your desired amount of eggs and let them cool completely before dying. I like to cool mine overnight just to ensure. If you’re looking for an easy way to hard boil eggs, be sure to check out my Instant Pot Hard Boiled Eggs without the Rack post.
Using mugs or small plastic cups, mix in 1 cup of water and 1-2 teaspoons of vinegar. If your eggs are not holding good color, I recommend adding a little more vinegar to ensure that they do.
Add several drops of food coloring to each cup and stir well enough that the coloring dissolves completely. I like to use a good amount of coloring to get that rich color that everyone loves on colored Easter eggs.
Place the hard-boiled eggs into the cups one at a time to dye. I use a wired whisk to easily place and remove each egg.
Let the eggs sit for about 3 minutes or until you’ve reached the desired coloring. Remove carefully and let them dry on an egg plate or cooling rack. I don’t like to use paper towels because the color tends to absorb.
Use stickers or rubber bands around the eggs to create fun shapes and designs before placing them into the dye cups. Let the eggs completely dry before enjoying them to decorate with.
