How to make these Lion King desserts:

1. Make two batches of rice krispie treats, one with regular crispy cereal and the other with cocoa crispy cereal.

To make rice krispies:

  • Prepare a 13 x 9 baking sheet with wax paper and a spritz of non-stick cooking spray.
  • Melt butter in a large saucepan over low heat. When the butter is melted, add the marshmallows and melt, stirring constantly. Remove the saucepan from heat.
  • Fold in the cereal. Stir until the cereal is coated in the marshmallow.
  • Using a buttered spatula or greased wax paper evenly press mixture into the baking sheet. Cool completely.

2. Use a larger paw print cookie cutter to cut treats from the regular krispie treats. If the treats are loose, press additional krispie mixture into the cookie cutter before releasing the shape onto waxed paper. Reshape the remaining cereal in your baking pan until all are used.
3. Use smaller paw print cookie cutter to cut treats from the cocoa krispie treats.
4. Then, use the cookie cutter to remove the middle from the regular krispie treat. Push the cocoa krispie treat into the middle of the regular krispie treat.
5. Press mini chocolate chips into the claws of the smaller paw print.
6. Press milk chocolate chips into the pad of the cocoa krispie treat and into the claws of the regular krispie treat.
7. Store in an airtight container. Best within 2 days.

Lion Krispie Treat

Do homemade Krispie treats expire?

Krispie treats are best eaten fresh but they will last for about three days in an airtight container.

The faster you can enjoy them, the better. They can be made a day ahead for parties but are best enjoyed the next day.

How to keep Krispie treats from getting hard

  1. Always use fresh marshmallows.
  2. Keep your heat low when melting the marshmallows and do not overheat.
  3. A thin layer of milk brushed onto the treats when finished can help keep them soft.
  4. Always store them in an airtight container.
  5. Don’t press too firmly onto the treats when making them.
  6. Don’t use more than the called for rice cereal.
