Every year for birthdays and Christmas I say the same thing, “don’t overdo it, Krystal!”. What do I end up doing? You guessed it. You’re walking through the store and those little voices go off in your head as you near the toy aisle of just how much this would make your children light up. We’re always finding ways to justify overdoing it for our kids. And why not? They’re our kids! These non-toy gift ideas are a great alternative.
While I love spoiling my kiddos with the latest and greatest, I like to incorporate these ideas too, to make memories together. This list of gift ideas for kids that aren’t toys are things we have done for our kids and they have loved it. Especially things like zoo passes and Disney on Ice.
Non-Toy Gift Ideas
You’ve heard it a hundred times. “Mom, I want to take karate!” “Mom, I wanna go to ballet school!” Our kids see something their friends are doing or something on television and suddenly they aspire to be that too.
Honestly, I’m all for my kids trying out anything they want to. If it works out, great. If not, at least they tried something new. So why not make this the perfect time to finally make their aspirations happen and try enrolling them in a fun extracurricular activity.
A Family Vacation
It doesn’t have to be Walt Disney World (although, that is one great idea). You can choose your local campground, a fun night in the city, a local water park with a resort, etc. Whatever your family loves to do.
Book a fun trip. And if you do choose something like Disney that is a distance from you (lucky to you who are close 😉 ) make it a big fun gift for everyone. Put together a surprise opening and make it a memory to last of the reactions of your kids. The holidays are a perfect time to surprise them with a fun outing.
Check out if there are any fun events coming to a town near you. Disney on Ice, a character meet and greet, basketball game, etc. All of those things are great ideas to surprise your kiddos with an outing to look forward with. We’re taking our daughter to see Elsa from Frozen next week. Talk about a treat!
Do you have a local water park? Maybe passes to the zoo? All of these ideas just keep on giving the whole year round. Create memories that last outside of just the home and enjoy time out with the family.
Gift Ideas for Kids That Aren’t Toys
Gift ideas for kids that aren’t toys don’t have to be over the top. I am finding more and more what my kids remember are the local and distant trips that we have been taking together.
The time spent in the car on the way to events or classes. Non-toy gift ideas are something that lasts forever when the material items end up in the hand me down box.
We surprised our kids last year with a trip to Walt Disney World and a Disney Cruise. While this gift was larger than other non-toy gift ideas, it is a time that I treasure. I had a chance to sit on the beach of Castaway Cay and take in the moments of watching my husband and kids play together in the water.
Those are moments I can never replace. While I love watching my kids light up for gifts during the year, those moments of bonding will be cherished by us and them forever.
