Thanks to Diono for providing us with a RadianRXT car seat, I am inspired to share with you today my road trip travel tips for toddlers and thoughts on this car seat because summer means it is time to get out and have fun!
Taking road trips are a great way to make family memories. No matter if it is across the country or across the state, getting out to see the world is amazing.
However, traveling with toddlers can feel overwhelming for some. Can they handle the distance? Can they handle the “stop and go” traffic? The smaller space?
We have taken a handful of road trips with our kids. Mostly across our great state of Washington, where you can see the desert, rainforest, mountains, city, and beach nearly in one day. We are certainly familiar with meltdowns, sudden potty needs and the “are we there yet?”.
Road Trip Travel Tips for Toddlers
Here are some road trip travel tips for toddlers that have worked well in our experience to ease the worries of traveling with a toddler.
Pack Plenty of Everything – When going on a road trip, it is tough to pack a lot. You’re in a small space and depending on your vehicle, you might not have a lot of storage space.
However, when it comes to snacks, drinks, diapers, wipes, and entertainment, you want to have enough.
Leave Early – If you have a certain timeline to be at your destination, be sure to leave early from home. You will be making frequent stops and might even have some struggle before you even leave the driveway.
Make time for everything from traffic to potty breaks.
Make Time for Stops – Along with leaving early, do make time for stops. Let the kids run a bit at a park or get out and eat together to keep the mood up.
Dress for Comfort, but Safely – Be sure to dress your little ones for comfort. If it is going to be a warmer day, be sure to stick with short-sleeved, lightweight shirts.
Also, remember to take jackets and coats off BEFORE buckling them into their car seats. This is an important safety precaution to ensure there isn’t any slack in their seat belts that could cause a hazard if in an accident.
Be Prepared for Emergency – We don’t like to think about it, but think ahead to what could happen. Flat tire, weather, etc. can quickly put a damper on a road trip.
However, if you have the proper things like a safety kit, first aid, a few extra blankets, roadside assistance, dealing with emergencies can go smoother. Especially when you have a toddler that might not have the highest of patience.
Keep Immediate Needs Accessible – Make sure you have snacks, drinks, wipes, etc. available and ready. You just never know when you’ll need them.
Join Them in the Backseat – Sometimes just getting in the back and reading together or playing a game together can help make kids feel more comfortable. Just knowing you’re “there”.
Charge Up – Make sure you have everything charged up and ready to go. Tablets, phones, video players, etc. Keep a charging cord in the car.
Portable Potty – Grab one of the portable potty chairs, if you can. We’ve used this on more than one occasion. When you can’t find a rest stop and someone has to go, this is useful.
Toys and Entertainment – Think about toys that are good for a car ride. Activities that won’t easily be dropped to the floor and go missing. Nothing like a meltdown when you can’t find a toy under the seat. Doodle boards are awesome.
Ensure They Are In a Great Car Seat – With 37.5 million American drivers will hitting the road this summer, safety is important when it comes to choosing a car seat for your toddler. I am recommending the Diono RadianRXT.
Diono is the leading manufacturer of child safety seats and travel accessories. We use Diono for both of our kids. I’ll share below some of the key features that make the Diono RadianRXT a great choice for your little one on a road trip.
These road trip travel tips for toddlers will hopefully make traveling a little bit easier with little ones. Don’t let a road trip not happen because of the ages of your kids. These moments don’t last forever and we only have 18 summers with our kids as children.

Ease of Use
As a mother of two, I think that one of the biggest things that gets a heavy sigh out of me is car seat installation. I want to do it the right way, ensure my kids are safe, but I also don’t want it to be a wrestling match in the backseat either. Both of our Diono’s have been so easy to install. It is quick and efficient.
- Fits 3 across in most mid-size vehicles, folds flat for travel and is FAA certified
- Unique SuperLATCH system that makes installation easy
- The cover is machine washable
- Rubber bottom grips for no-slip installation
- 10-year life
Our kids love the expandable sides and ease of boarding into the car. My toddler is in the “I can do it myself” phase. With his Diono car seat, he can climb in easily and safely.
- Infant body support cushions and memory foam for added comfort
- 12-position adjustable headrest, 5 shoulder, and 3 buckle positions deliver a comfortable ride.
- Expandable sides and long seat bottom allow proper leg support
- The low-sitting profile makes it easy for your child to board
- Angled cup holder keeps a variety of drinks upright and within easy reach
No matter if you’re going a long distance or a short distance, being comfortable and safe on a road trip with your kids are the most important things. When everyone is happy and has peace of mind, each trip is smoother.
I hope these road trip travel tips for toddlers help and give you a chance to check out the Diono RadianRXT if you’re in line for a new car seat. Happy travels!
