Do you struggle to bake chocolate chip cookies that rise? Here is the perfect shortening chocolate chip cookies recipe that will bake them to be thick, soft, and chewy.

What does shortening do to chocolate chip cookies? Unlike butter, shortening doesn’t melt as quickly. Allowing flour and egg to set prior and creating taller cookies.
I was nominated as the “cookie killer” for years because I could not seem to create a batch of cookies that wasn’t flat. They’d taste pretty good but look terrible.
In this recipe, I use both butter and shortening so you still get that incredible buttery flavor.
I know that you can purchase a butter flavor shortening but I often find my grocer sold out of that type during the holidays or in our current times.

- shortening
- butter
- flour
- egg
- brown sugar
- salt
- vanilla extract
- baking soda
- semi-sweet chocolate chips
How to make these cookies with shortening:
First, set your oven to 375° F and line two baking pans with parchment paper. Set aside.
Using a mixer, combine shortening, butter, brown sugar, and vanilla in a medium setting. Add the egg and mix well.
Sift together in a separate bowl the flour, salt, and baking soda. Slowly pour in the dry mixture into the dough mixture. Turn off the mixer and add in semi-sweet chocolate chips.

Using a spatula, fold in the chips by hand into the dough. You may chill the dough for a half-hour if you like.
However, this recipe does not need to be chilled. Chilling it will only help form the dough better on the baking sheets.
I personally like to use a medium-sized cookie scoop to place the dough onto the baking sheet.
Lay the dough out about 2-inches apart. You should be able to get 2-dozen cookies from this recipe.

Put the baking sheet in the oven for about 8-minutes or until golden brown.
Remove from oven and let stand on the baking sheet for about 3-minutes to cool. Remove the cookies from the baking sheet and let them finishing cooling to room temperature on a wire cooling rack.
Enjoy with a glass of milk or however you like!
You’ll love these chewy and flavorful chocolate chip cookies. No more flat cookies again!
