With travel plans to Disney World, I’ve been practicing my hand at how to make Mickey Ears with fabric. I’m no expert and won’t be starting my own Etsy shop soon, but I’ve enjoyed coming up with new ideas for our family. These instructions will give you a chance to DIY Disney Mickey Ears at home.
I will note that these DIY Disney Mickey Ears do take some patience to create. I also went through the material a few times trying to get the hang of it. After about three sets of ears, I think I have a small handle on it.
How much are the Mickey Mouse ears at Disneyland?
With Mickey Ears are priced from $14.99 to $24.99 (tax not included and all prices subject to change), they can get very pricey. The cost to make your own DIY Mickey Ears is under $10 usually, if you do not have a lot of expensive embellishments. Not to mention, the basic embroidery is $3.00 while premium embroidery fonts are $7.00 at Disneyland. I love Disney ears as much as the next person but it is also fun to customize your own too.

DIY Mouse Ear Headband Template
- Using a large coffee mug or cup (I used a small serving dish), trace a circle on the cardboard.
- Taking your headband, trace inside of the circle where your headband would bend. Think where you would glue your ears into.
- Cut out the cardboard circle with the indent you just made for the headband.
- Using your new cutout, trace two ears onto the Styrofoam board.
- Cut out each of the ears with an Exacto knife.
How to Make Mickey Ears with Fabric
- Taking your fabric, trace a circle around one of the ear cutouts. Exaggerate your tracing by about 2cm so you have room for the stitching. Do this for 4 pieces of fabric, total.
- Lay the 2 of the pattern sides of fabric facing inward to one another.
- Sew around the outer rim of the fabric, being careful not to get too close to the edge. You want room for turning your fabric inside out.
- Leave about 3/4 open of the fabric so you can stuff the ear. Double knot each end of the thread to hold.
- Sew the other ear the same.
- Turn your fabric inside out into the circular shape.
- Take your Styrofoam board cutout and stuff it into the ear. Lining up the curved end to the opening of the fabric. This might take a few tries to get it right.
- Once your Styrofoam board is in place, stuff the inside with cotton balls. Use enough to have a good fluffed ear.
- Take the open ends of your fabric and fold them over.
- Hot glue them shut.
DIY Mickey Ears
- Taking your headband again, line up where you would like to glue your ears.
- Mark a dot at each end of each ear on the headband where you will place these.
- Run a thick line of hot glue from marking to marking.
- Secure your ears on your headband, curve side in. Press firmly to hold.
- Let the ears dry securely onto the headband.
- Now is the fun part. Use a bow, embellishments, anything you wish to add to the center or ears. Create it to match you and have fun with it!
- Let everything dry and wear your Mickey Ears with fabric with your favorite Disney themed outfit.
